Symi island

Symi Town, also known as Gialos or Yialos, is the main port and administrative center of the small island of Symi in the Dodecanese group of islands in Greece.

Gialos is situated on the northeastern coast of Symi island, overlooking a picturesque natural harbor. The town is built amphitheatrically around the harbor, with colorful neoclassical buildings cascading down the hillsides.

One of the defining features of Gialos is its stunning architecture, characterized by pastel-colored houses with wooden balconies and Venetian-style facades. Many of these buildings date back to the 19th century when Symi was a prosperous sponge-diving and shipbuilding center.

Gialos Harbor is the heart of Symi Town and serves as the main point of arrival for visitors to the island. The harbor is bustling with activity, with fishing boats, yachts, and traditional wooden caïques (local boats) bobbing in the crystal-clear waters. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront promenade, lined with tavernas, cafes and shops selling local crafts and souvenirs.

Located near the harbor, the Archaeological Museum of Symi Town houses a collection of artifacts dating back to ancient times. Exhibits include pottery, sculptures, and other artifacts discovered on the island, providing insight into Symi’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Kali Strata is a scenic stone staircase that connects Gialos Harbor with the upper town of Chorio. The staircase is lined with grand neoclassical mansions, offering breathtaking views of the harbor and surrounding hillsides along the way. Visitors can climb the steps or take a leisurely stroll to explore the charming streets and alleys of Chorio.

While not located directly in Gialos, the Panormitis Monastery is a significant religious and cultural site on Symi island. Situated on the southwestern coast of the island, the monastery is dedicated to the Archangel Michael and attracts pilgrims from across Greece. Visitors can explore the monastery complex, which includes a Byzantine church, a museum and a picturesque courtyard.

Symi Town – Gialos is a charming and picturesque destination that offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history, culture, and natural beauty of Symi island. Whether exploring its historic harbor, admiring its neoclassical architecture, or soaking up the sun on its pristine beaches, Gialos has something to offer for every traveller.
